Hey, New Paltz!

I am so excited to reintroduce myself as Village of New Paltz Mayor Alexandria Wojcik! My pronouns are she/they, and I am the first-ever openly queer mayor of our fabulous little village!!!!! And this November, with all of your help, I will be the first-ever woman elected to the position!! 

I was first elected to the Village board in 2019, and re-elected in 2023. This January I stepped up to fill the Mayoral vacancy, as I was the Deputy Mayor since 2021; in February, I was formally appointed Mayor. So far this year, serving as our Mayor has been the coolest job I’ve ever held, and the honor of my lifetime.

My priorities as Mayor are:

• Radically inclusive constituent services, meeting people where they are at, democratizing systems so that local government works for ALL people. 

• Public works for the people – including breaking ground on the skate garden in Hasbrouck Park.

• Continuance of GOOD government – with two decades of experience working in local and state government in a variety of roles from public interest lobbyist, to new york state senate external relations associate, to village deputy clerk, to activist and advocate, and of course elected village trustee and mayor – I’m proud to have already picked up exactly where my predecessors left off and commit to leaving Village Hall (and our greater community) better than I found it. And, I will always stand with labor!

I have the policy chops and experience to represent our community with intelligence, and the heart to represent our community with kindness. I am doing the work to ensure the positive strides made under my leadership – and that the village’s services, protections, and community character – transcend any one person and are “consolidation proof.”

I believe our community deserves representation that reflects the population and its shared experiences and values. It matters that people see themselves reflected in local leadership. 80% of our village population rent our homes. The village is the historic home to the first same-sex weddings in the country. Our village is more economically and racially diverse than most of Ulster County, even if the appearances of local leadership would make one think otherwise. Representation matters. I vow to remain steadfast in my commitment to be the voice for the voiceless, to be anti-racist in all I do, to create and curate safe and welcoming spaces for marginalized people in particular.
